Size Guide:
On each Benebone label, we provide guidelines to help you choose a toy for your dog. Our guidelines are for rough reference only. Benebones are not suitable for dogs that weigh more than our recommended guidelines or for dogs that are very strong or very aggressive chewers.
Always choose the largest product your dog can handle, even if you have a dog rated for a smaller size. Keep small toys away from larger dogs so they are not accidentally ingested. Dog toys with closed holes and irregular shapes have the possibility of getting stuck on a dog’s jaw, paw, or other part of their body. Size up your dog and your Benebone to reduce this risk.
Dog Weight | Recommended Dental Chew Size | Toy Dimensions |
Under 30 lbs | Small | 5.5" x 3.5" |
Under 60 lbs | Medium | 7.5" x 4.4" |
Under 90 lbs | Large | 8.3" x 4.5" |
Best Practices & Safety Information:
A dog’s use of Benebone products should always be supervised. Monitoring and replacement are essential to your dog’s safety.
Benebones are not edible. Benebone suggests monitoring and replacement after reasonable wear. As with any chew toy, monitor your dog's habits closely. In general, if pieces the size of rice or smaller fall off the Benebone, these generally do not cause a problem. But if you see a risk to larger pieces coming off, discard and replace. Though a rough guide only, Benebones should be discarded if more than a sugar cube’s worth of product is missing. Regardless, the product should be replaced after one month of purchase.
Benebones are made of nylon, which is a hard substance. Aggressive chewing can cause chips or cracks in teeth and possibly result in tooth loss/removal. Not all dogs have the teeth to withstand aggressive chewing of hard substances such as nylon. Tooth injury is an unavoidable risk when using chew toys of this hardness and durability, such as nylon, natural bones, and antlers. Consider softer products to avoid this risk. Benebones are also not appropriate for dogs (such as older dogs) that may have compromised tooth strength.
After aggressive chewing, the product can become bristled and sharp. The product in this condition can cause gum irritation, even bleeding. Also, the product could cause abrasion or injury to another part of a dog’s or human’s body. The product can be smoothed with a wood file or heavy grit sandpaper.
